In response to the Ministry of Education's request to expand face-to-face classes, only those courses that satisfy the conditions for face-to-face classes were converted offline. Accordingly, classes on ERICA campus were switched to face-to-face classes from October, and classes on Seoul campus started in November. Courses marked as “face-to-face” or “hybrid” in the course manual in August were allowed to chage to faceto-face classes while maintaining social distance. For students unable to attend school according to the standards of the Infectious Disease Control Committee (IDCC) or foreign students unable to enter Korea due to COVID-19, professors must provide them with realtime video lectures or recorded videos of face-to-face classes. In the case of Seoul Campus, students were notified two weeks in advance of classes that would be converted to face-to-face classes.

Student’s Stance

The Hanyang Journal interviewed a student whose residence changed due to the conversion to face-to-face classes. Kim Soyeon, a Freshman in the Department of Data Science, shared her thoughts about switching to faceto-face classes this November. She said, “Itʼs a bit disappointing that the school had to make an announcement and suddenly start face-to-face classes due to the sudden change of government guidelines. However, as for the faceto-face class itself, I view it positively as the concentration in class is better and the progress is smoother. The faceto-face notice came out in a hurry, and even though I looked for a place to live in advance, there were not many houses left. It was a race against the clock. In the case of on-campus facilities where we can take real-time video classes, we used the lounge and art space that can be used by the department, but there is no desk in the lounge and the art space does not have a place to charge a laptop, so it was disappointing.” She said that it would be better to provide more space for real-time video classes at school in consideration of taking two classes continuously. Regarding quarantine, although social distancing is being observed during class, she said itʼs a shame that the person in charge of checking the temperature and scanning the QR code in the Fusion Technology Center (FTC) building has recently disappeared and has changed voluntarily.

Professor’s Stance

We interviewed Hyun Eun-ryung, a Professor in the Department of Applied Art Education, who has converted two major classes into face-to-face classes since November. In the case of , a second-year major class, it was revealed that she did not see students after their entrance into school. As a result of a survey conducted in the class, she decided to switch to face-to-face class because there were many students who wanted to learn from her in person. In the case of , the fourth-year grade major class, studentsʼ computers are divided into IBM and Mac, so the programs were not compatible. She had to switch to face-to-face class because of this physical educational environment. There were some difficulties where she had no choice but to use the same model and version of the computer in the school lab. Regarding communication with students, she said, “Itʼs a major class, so I’m good at exchanging opinions with students in the department's Kakao Talk chatroom. I was doing well in survey, announcement, and guidance for faceto-face and non-face-to-face classes. The school Learning Management System (LMS) is also used to send text messages.” She is also preparing Zoom classes for students who can’t attend and is considering to limit the number of students in her classes because of the uncertainty of what the coronavirus situation will be like in the future. HYU’s Stance About the discussion process related to the conversion to face-to-face classes, we had an interview with Jang Gyeongseon, a Deputy General Manager of the Academic Affairs Team. The Ministry of Education requested face-to-face classes at schools on October 8, as 70% of the population completed the primary vaccination and the minimum conditions for university face-to-face activities were prepared. Accordingly, the IDCC approved in November to allow face-toface classes for courses that satisfy the conditions for such. In this process, the academic team communicated with the Student Council Emergency Response Committee through the Task Force Team (TFT) meeting for making good classes. She said that she has been working continuously to ensure that students taking real-time video classes can use the campus facilities well. In June, the Academic Affairs Team asked each building management college and department of HYU to provide a space and environment so that students could smoothly take real-time video classes within the school. Accordingly, Office of Information and Communications Technology Services conducted a survey on the status of real-time video classes for students in July. Based on this, the academic team requested that each building management Residential College (RC) department be provided with an appropriate space and environment. We also interviewed Lee Kyung-tae, Manager of the ERICA Campus Control Team, to see how quarantine is being carried out in the school. He said that the quarantine is contacted in real time, and he is on emergency standby even on weekends. He goes to HYU to conduct quarantine, disinfecting the building and preventing people from entering for a certain period of time. He also controls the entire building in case of a mass infection. In the case of dormitory quarantine, the rooms in the dormitory are private spaces. As trespassing is not allowed, it is necessary to conduct personal quarantine. However, Manager Lee said that public spaces such as bathroom entrances, hallways and elevators are being publicly disinfected at least twice a week. The dormitory room where the confirmed person used is being quarantined regardless of day or night through real-time emergency contact. In the case of classroom quarantine, it is said that disinfection is carried out once a day when no one is around, such as 8:30 a.m. or after 6 p.m..

Conclusion

Due to lecturesʼ characteristics, there are some classes that must be conducted face-to-face. Communication between students, school, and professors is an important issue in the face-to-face conversion of these classes. Students wanted to receive notice of the transition to face-to-face classes three weeks to a month in advance. It would have been better if the students had enough time to prepare for the face-to-face class. As a result of the survey, there were many opinions that the distance between seats, temperature check, and QR code were not conducted properly. In the future, H Y U s h o u l d c o n s i d e r s t u d e n t s ʼ complaints in order to smoothly proceed next yearʼs face-to-face classes. It is necessary to ensure that students can attend classes without anxiety while following the quarantine rules.
