The First Memorial Ceremony for the Baiknam

  The first memorial ceremony for the Baiknam, Dr. Kim Lyun-joon who established the Hanyang foundation was held at Baiknam Music Art Hall on January 7. He passed away from inveterate disease in the Hanyang University (HYU) hospital on January 7, 2008.
  Bereaved family and many condolence callers attended the memorial service and ceremony which started at 10a.m. and lasted about an hour and a half. The ceremony was divided into two parts. During the first part, people prayed silently and chanted psalms which were composed by Baiknam. The second part was involved viewing a video which looked back upon his life. All of the participants were in grief and cherished the memories in silence. After the lunch, worship was held at his tomb at Seojeong-dong, Pyeongtaek-si.
  Dr. Kim was born in Myeong cheon, Hamgyeongbuk-do. Graduated Yonhi College in 1939 and found the Dong-A Polytechnic Institute and the HYU. He was the first and fourth president of HYU and founded many educational institutions including Hanyang Middle and High school, Middle and High School Attached to College of Education HYU, the HYU hospital, and Hanyang Cyber University. Additionally, he established Hanyang Development Inc., and Hanyang Securities Inc., etc.
  He also was a man of great erudition in music and he composed 1610 lieder such as Elegy, I Will Live Among the Green Hill. He held the first baritone recital in Korea. And he has consecutively filled the role of honorary chief of The Music Association of Korea and he had charged of adviser of Naemaemuinorae, which is about Korean lied organization.
  He also founded and published Daehanilbo and kidokkyosinmun, and was director of the International Press Institute. He won an Awards of Excellence for education in the field of music in both Korea and Italy.
The president of HYU Kim Chong-yang said, “My father fought against a deadly disease for a long time, but until he passed away, he remained unchanged and upright, and I learned to be unchanged and upright to him.”
On May 15, the HYU Alumni Association will erect a statue of Kim, Lyun-joon to pay tribute to his memory. It will be erected in front of the Administration Buildings on both Seoul and Ansan campuses, and it will be subsidized by the Alumni Association.
