“I believe you can achieve ANYTHING when you graduate from Hanyang University (HYU).” said Kang Sung-goon. Kang Sung-goon, vice president of the HYU, was a student and is currently a professor here. He was appointed as the vice president this year through nomination. The Hanyang Journal has decided to ask him about his life as a Hanyangian.
He entered HYU in 1966 and graduated in 1970. “When I was a student at HYU, the conditions were terrible. There were more lecturers than professors and the lecture rooms had no air conditioning or heating. Most surprisingly, the toilets were located outside the buildings in the middle of nowhere. Also the transportation to the school was also terrible.” He added, “The employment rate were still low then, not like you would imagine today, but I feel sorry for you because the economy of today, has reached its peak, and have no where to look up to. High unemployment leads to high competition definitely leads to more competition among the students.” Regarding students’ school life he said, “These days, interaction between the students within the same department is minimal. In my times we all knew each other and since our graduation we still gather every few. You would not be able to do that, would you?”
After graduating he became an examiner’s assistant and later, went over to Germany to study. During his studies in Germany, he had been underestimated by his roommate because he was Asian. However, an event changed his roommate’s attitude towards him. “One day, he was drawing a graph on graph paper that was upside down. I corrected it and since then his attitude about me changed. He must have realized that the Asian in his room was not stupid after all. Later on, he even insisted on picking my parents up when they visited Frankfurt.”
Due to the fact that Mr. Kang had been a student at HYU student of HYU, he had something to say to the Hanyangians. “I believe, by graduating from HYU, you can achieve anything you want.” He said that in every important part of the Korean society, there will always be a graduate from HYU. “University professors, politicians, reporters, artists, film directors, and actors, if you name any job, you will be able to find at least one Hanyangian working in that specific field. So set a goal for yourself and do everything you can to achieve it. If you do this, I believe nothing is impossible.” Hayangians, be proud and believe in yourself and that you can do it.
