Extension of Senses: Electronic Era : Harmonizing with Electronic Devices

Starting from November 29, 2021, Hanyang University Museum (HYM) is planning to hold Extension of Senses: Electronic Era, a new exhibition about industrial history in South Korea. Supported by the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History as a part of the 2021 Modern and Contemporary History Network Project, the exhibition will present various artifacts related to the development of electronic devices during the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, it is a chance to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the nation’s first computer ‘Analogue Electronic Calculator 3’, the Registered Cultural Properties No.558 invented by former Vice President Lee Man-young at Hanyang University (HYU). Unlike pre-existing exhibitions which mostly introduced the history of electronic devices in terms of industry and cultural art, this exhibition covers the theme within the framework of humans. Especially, it focuses on how different senses in our brain- sight, hearing and touch- would develop and affect one another in the new electronic era today. According to Jang Myeong-seon, a Curator from HYM, the exhibition is special in that it consists of various modern artifacts that HYM has been possessing for more than 20 years, such as vacuum-tube television from Zenith Electronics Cooperation and transistor radio from Goldstar Cooperation. Moreover, collections of electronic devices donated by HYU families, both the Honorary Professor Rhee Joong-geun and a Patent Lawyer Choi Dal-yong from the Class of 66 from Division of Electrical Engineering at HYU ERICA campus, would enrich the exhibition. “Throughout the exhibition, HYM will be able to extend its scope of artifacts to modern and contemporary history. Furthermore, with diverse artifacts connected to visitors’ daily lives, they would think of the future where they should coexist with electronic devices in harmony,” she added.

Hanyang, The Best University for Quality Start-up Education

On October 20, 2021, Hanyang University (HYU) won an official commendation from the Ministry of Education, being selected as the “2021 Best University for Start-up Education” at the 2021 Industry-Academica Cooperation EXPO. Since 2015, the Ministry of Education and Korea Entrepreneurship Foundation have been selecting the two best universities each year, and this was the second time for HYU to be honored with the selection. Jun Sang-gyung, the Director of Hanyang Institute for Entrepreneurship (HIE), said that well-established startup supporting systems in HYU resulted in a big achievement. “HYU has a start-up curriculum system in five stages and provides an environment where students can learn theories and practical knowledge about start-ups step by step. Besides, various globalized infrastructures only available in HYU, such as ‘Global Accelerator’ and ‘Global Start-up Mentoring’, are activated to support student founders at a high level. Additionally, in collaboration with other organizations in HYU, like LINC+ center, Industry-University Cooperation center, and HYU Holdings, there are some on-the-spot start-up programs ready for students. In the case of last year, about 11,979 students participated in these start-up programs and produced 84 new start-up clubs and 73 actual startups.” Particularly, HIE is absorbed in creating an environment where students can stably engage in start-up activities; ‘Start-up Dormitories’ only for student founders, ‘Commax Start-up Town’ as a complimentary personal space for start-up clubs, and ‘Business Incubator Center’ for outstanding student founders etc. With such efforts, HYU is known to be the most passionate university about start-up, ranking first in producing student founders for the fourth year in a row. In conclusion, this accomplishment seems to be the result of being officially recognized for the excellence of HYU’s start-up education. “Based on HYU’s unrivaled start-up environment, we will continue to expand the start-up supporting infrastructures and contribute to revitalizing the start-up culture in the local community in order to lead the domestic start-up ecosystem,” he added.

2021 Next Impact Conference: The Future of ESG for All

Hanyang University (HYU) is hosting an event called the 2021 Next Impact Conference with the Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR). The 2021 Next Impact Conference will be held through Youtube Live on October 28 with the topic of ‘The Future of ESG (Environment, Social, Government) For All’. Next Impact Conference is an international conference about collective impact, which has been continuously held since 2018. As a hub in the AsiaPacific region, it is an event where various stakeholders meet, connect, and cooperate to make a better world through collective impact and sustainable ESG. According to Shin Hyun-jung, a P r o f e s s o r f r o m t h e S c h o o l o f Business at HYU, as ESG is gathering worldwide attention, lots of companies are beginning to recognize ESG as a necessity, not an option. However, much of the recent discussion on ESG is focused on technical discussion on how to receive good ESG ratings, which will eventually lead to other criticisms, such as “ESG washing”. Instead, now is the time to think about the essence and look for a fundamental and longterm alternation to deal with ESG risk more effectively. In this sense, the 2021 Next Impact Conference tries to focus on exploring the essence of ESG from a long-term point of view and discuss its future. This year’s program consists of five sessions: Impactful ESG for All, The Future of Environmental Impact for All, The Future of Social Impact for All, The Future of Governance Impact for All, and The Future of ESG for All from the Generation Z Changemaker’s point of view. Professor Shin personally recommends the first session for those who want to become an entrepreneur, since it deals with the main points that are needed for company management, including some good examples. She hopes that the 2021 Next Impact Conference expands the opportunity for students at HYU to participate as players who lead the ESG ecosystem at home and abroad in having a positive influence on society.

Assisting Farms by Volunteer Service Agreement

On October 8th, 2021, Hanyang University(HYU) has established the ‘Gyeonggi-do College Student Rural Community Volunteer Service Agreement’ via zoom. The agreement’s valid period will be two years. We learned further details of the agreement through Nam Sang-back, the Deputy Director of Volunteer Service Center. Director Nam shared the reasons why the agreement was made. “The farming population of rural areas in Gyeonggi-do is decreasing, while the aging population is increasing. Moreover, due to the wide spread of COVID-19, the labor costs have risen, and entry restrictions have been placed upon foreign workers. Due to these factors, the farms are lacking human resources for the farming season. In order to overcome such problems and support these farms, Gyeonggi-do agreed upon the business cooperation with the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation and universities located in Gyeonggi-do.” HYU Volunteer Service Center has been planning an adequate volunteer service for a while. Since there have been demands for farming experience by the club association and some students during the pandemic situation, Gyeonggido has made a timely suggestion to HYU by proposing the school’s participation in the project. Director Nam added, “I hope this agreement becomes a motivation to provide practical assistance to shorthanded farms and arranges a continuous cooperation system to support human resources for the farming season. I’m looking forward to seeing students who realize the value of volunteer services in agricultural realms by experiencing onsite farming activity.” This would allow students to create a sense of achievement and have an opportunity of farm-related job experience. Also, they will mature in positive ways, paying attention to diverse social roles within the community.
