Women Engineer at Hanyang (WE-HY) Center held the first ever WEHY Cinema Day on May 30th, 2017. This was an event organized for any Hanyang University (HYU) students interested in female leadership and gender issues. Students were allowed to freely participate in the event, after submitting applications one week prior to the event through the WE-HY Facebook page. The event was held in the lounge of the main building of the HYU Engineering Center, which lasted for about three hours. Two major activities were done in the program: first, watching movies related to gender issues, and second, debating around those problems.
Through the event, WE-HY sought to convey the meaning of female leadership and give rise to the sense of gender equality. Students who participated in the program were able to have an earnest discussion about building proper perspectives on various gender issues as well as a Q&A session with the professors. Based on student satisfaction on Cinema Day, it was later planned to be continued on a monthly basis, except during vacation.
The WE-HY Cinema Day was held in line with the HYU WE-UP program that was launched in September, 2016, and was funded by the Ministry of Education. The aim of this program is to promote a female-friendly education and labor environment that allows female undergraduate engineers to continue their dreams and develop as global leaders of engineering in Korea.
Through this event, HYU students were able to take a closer look at female leadership and gender sensitivity in Korea, realizing the measures that students should take to alleviate the gender inequality that the current Korean society is facing.
