Scholarships are a vital part of university systems and are especially important for students from economically or socially marginalized households as it gives them the deserved opportunity to focus on their studies and pursue their dreams. Acknowledging such importance, Hanyang University (HYU) has recently re-evaluated its current scholarship system and has announced updates in hopes to establish an academic safety net starting from the 2022 spring semester.

The student support team at the Office of Student Affairs on Seoul Campus has already been providing monthly living expenses worth 200,000 won to vulnerable students to boost academic motivation through the “Lion Scholarship” since 2018. The updated version will include three new scholarship programs “Lion Plus Scholarship”, “Lion Help Scholarship”, and “Lion Aid Scholarship” in addition to the existing one.

The “Lion Plus Scholarship” will be available to students registered under Basic Livelihood Security Program(BLSP) with 2.0 credits or higher. They will be provided with 500,000 won per month for living expenses. Students on the verge of discontinuing their studies due to household difficulties will be able to apply for the “Lion Help Scholarship” according to the qualifications stated in the “Emergent Economic Difficulty Scholarship.” Finally, the “Lion Aid Scholarship,” expected to take effect starting next year, will be available for students from a low-income household that have a minimum credit of 3.0.

ERICA Campus will also be introducing a new scholarship under the name “ERICA Futuristic Living Expense Scholarship” starting on March 2, 2022. Students of ERICA Campus registered under BLSP will be provided 500,000 won per month if eligible, and 400,000 won will be provided to students from low- income households for the next four years. Students who are not officially registered in the two categories will also be considered if they provide susceptible documents that prove that their parents’ negative health conditions or financial difficulties.
