From April to May this year, Hanyang University (HYU) and Daesang Corporation held the “2022 Food Tech Idea Contest.” This was the first official competition taking place regarding “Food Tech Idea” for HYU students. The sponsor of this contest was Daesang Corporation, a general food company in Korea that generates various things related to food such as online food business like Chungjungone and Jongga, food productions and BIO industry.

The purpose of this contest was to discover items that could turn into original services or products and to train novel student entrepreneurs at HYU. Suitable for its purposes, students presented innovative services or ideas related to the food industry including development or production of food, online commercial services, food platforms, pet food and food health care. Students were able to participate in this contest even if they merely had an “idea” for their services or goods.

“ 2 0 2 2 F o o d Te c h C o n t e s t ” proceeded in three stages: Document Examination, Mentoring Day, and Evaluation of Presentation. “On Mentoring Day, candidates who have passed the document examination can receive mentoring from the experts and officials from Daesang Corporation for 30 minutes each,” explained Jeong Han-wool, the director of “2022 Food Tech Idea Contest” as well as the manager from Hanyang Institute for Entrepreneurship.

Director Jeong also pointed out the uniqueness of the “2022 Food Tech Idea Contest.” Compared to this contest, other previous competitions’ funds had been sponsored by both HYU and the firms. However, all of the funds and prize money of the competition were provided by Daesang Corporation. This shows how much they are looking forward to meeting new student entrepreneurs at HYU with unconventional items. “They were expecting ideas coming from fresh perspectives of students because items that were produced in the company have been quite limited,” Director Jeong emphasized.
