The relationship between art and society is similar to the chicken and egg situation. Does art affect our society, or is it vice versa? Regarding the question, if you think that society influences art and the times are inevitably reflected in it, you would enjoy a visit to this exhibition, The Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London. Korea and the United Kingdom established diplomatic relations in 1883 and celebrated the 140th anniversary of their exchange this year by displaying 52 masterpieces in Korea. In the exhibition space, the works of art tycoons such as Raffaello, Gauguin, Van Gogh, and Monet are distinguished according to the artistic trends that progressed over time. Alongside the artworks are descriptive phrases for each aesthetic era. Another interesting feature of this exhibition is that the theme of art has shifted from deity to mankind and our daily lives. If the main characters in the golden frames are no longer religion and deity, but ourselves, how could one say that art affects society? History shows us the answer to the aforementioned question at The Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London.
