Hanyang University (HYU)'s Social Service Team (SST) and Hangaji, a Leader Group from Heemanghandae, in collaboration with the Miral Welfare Foundation, operated an interactive booth showcasing the innovative use of upcycled t-shirt yarn. The booth was held at HYU's Hanmadang from June 7 to 9.

Upcycled t-shirt yarn, a type of yarn derived from recycled clothing that would otherwise be discarded, took center stage at the interactive booth. Participating students had the opportunity to create their own t-shirt yarn bracelets.

HYU's volunteer club Hangaji primarily focuses on environmental protection through resource recycling, carrying out various initiatives such as food-sharing campaigns and solar lantern assembly interactive booths. These events are collectively conducted by the Miral Welfare Foundation, which supports disabled individuals and energypoor nations. Notably, the t-shirt yarn interactive booth was uniquely organized and managed by the students of Hangaji themselves.

Hong Su-yeong, an Assistant Manager of SST, emphasized the potential of upcycled t-shirt yarn. "Although the booth led a simple bracelet-making activity, it sparked participants' interest in adopting this eco-friendly practice." The appeal lies in its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, as anyone can easily craft various items like bags, baskets, and headbands with upcycled t-shirt yarn. It is a fascinating and accessible way to contribute to an eco-friendly lifestyle.

However, the booth faced certain challenges. Hong noted, "The turnout was relatively low due to the hot weather in early June and ongoing final exams." He also highlighted the lack of awareness among students regarding event announcements on HYU's website. "Regular visits to the website are crucial as it offers numerous opportunities for enjoyable experiences and future career development," he stated.

In the meantime, Hangaji's environmental protection campaign continues with the installation of "Hangaji Box" for collecting secondhand clothing from HYU dormitory residents. Students keen on actively participating in HYU's various social innovation events may also join existing volunteer groups like Hangaji or form teams independently in Heemanghandae.
