On January 17, 2024, Hanyang University Paiknam Library and Academic Information Center (Paiknam Library), organized a seminar on “Research Ethics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI).” The seminar featured a lecture by Professor Lee Hyo-bin from Chungnam National University who shed light on the various AI tools and the unintentional research misconduct that may occur when utilizing them.

There are several forms of research misconduct to be aware of when using AI. For instance, it is common for individuals to rely solely on information obtained from an AI search engine without verifying its accuracy. Furthermore, since AI does not incorporate proper quotation marks when generating plausible sentences, using AIgenerated text without attribution may lead to plagiarism issues. Researchers also must exercise caution when utilizing AI to translate foreign literature into their work, as multiple researchers may inadvertently end up with the same or similar sentences.

Professor Lee stressed, “Researchers must understand that AI should only serve as an aid to research, not as the foundation for it.” As AI cannot be considered a co-writer of a paper, the researcher bears complete responsibility for the content. Professor Lee therefore recommends using AI in the initial stages of research to organize thoughts or identify existing theories. Additionally, employing AI for proofreading and revising completed content can be highly efficient.

“Despite being held during winter vacation, the seminar attracted nearly 50 participants, including graduate students, undergraduate students, professors, and faculty members,” said Yang Yu-jin, a staff member of Paiknam Library. She mentioned, “Following the seminar, I received numerous phone calls and emails expressing gratitude for the valuable insights shared.” The Paiknam Library holds research ethics seminars twice a year, focusing on topics relevant to students’ interests and current trends. Yang emphasized, “Various programs, such as 1:1 research consulting, are conducted every month. Actively searching for and learning the necessary education on your own is recommended for a fulfilling college life.”
